Norwegian Wood is a movie adaptation of the 1987 novel of the same name by Haruki Murakami. Directed by Tran Anh Hung, it was released in Japan on 11 October 2010 and in France on 16 December 2010. The film stars Kenichi Matsuyama as Toru Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi as Naoko Sawamura, Kiko Mizuhara as Midori Kobayashi, Tatsuya Fujiwara as Takashi Komuro and Yuichi Fukuda as Joji. The screenplay was adapted from Haruki Murakami's novel Norwegian Wood by Jay Rubin and Tran Anh Hung. The film's score was composed by the French composer Alexandre Desplat. In the late 1960s, Toru, a sensitive and somewhat introverted college student in Tokyo, is intrigued by his fellow student Naoko, despite her being engaged to his close friend Kizuki. However their relationship is cut short when Kizuki dies in a storm while hiking with Toru. In the meantime, Toru becomes involved with a dysfunctional family belonging to a progressive farming movement. Norwegian Wood received mixed reviews from critics and holds a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 18 reviews with an average rating of 5.7/10. The critical consensus states: "While the film's complex plot and fine performances may draw in some viewers, it fails as a character-driven drama." On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 top reviews from mainstream critics, the film has received an average score of 50 based on 12 reviews.
